Into Iowa

Sunday July 29

We entered a new time zone yesterday and forgot to tell Isaac. So, he slept until 7:00 this morning instead of 6:00. That meant a little bit later start for us, but also a little more sleep! The kids could see the playground from our campsite, so we were barely dressed before we were over there playing. Ron packed the whole car by himself while the kids and I played. We had 100 miles to our first destination for the day - Mitchell, SD for the Corn Palace! (Look for postcards, we got a whole bunch here!). They decorate the outside and change the huge murals every year. We are having fun being silly at these tacky tourist traps, but I admit I was impressed by the amount of work that goes into it. Click to see the Rushmore image larger. They use something like 13 different varieties of corn. Want to find out more? hee hee With a late start and only 100 miles down by 1:00, we were sure we would not get in many miles today. But, we spent all afternoon driving and waiting for the kids to take their naps, which they finally did about 4:00. We found a hotel around 5:00 (because we couldn't find a camping cabin in the area :)). We turned south today, off of Rt 90 and onto Rt 29, tomorrow we will again turn east at Kansas City on Rt. 70. We are just outside of Omaha, Nebraska - though our route doesn't actually dip in to NE. I keep trying to convince Ron that we need to get off the interstate and go over, just because we are so close and we have never been there. But he thinks it is silly to go to Nebraska just because we are in Iowa. We also missed Minnesota by about 15 miles, two states we'll have to get to some other time! We made 348 miles today. I added a little to yesterday's post - our goal right now is Cape Girardeau, MO to see my grandma, and it turns out, my mom who will be there visiting! After that, straight on to Malone and finding a place in Canton!
